We tested six AI tools for this evaluation, balancing free and paid options, different workflows, and various levels of user experience:

  • Google Gemini — Google’s AI search platform offers smart summarization and source attribution directly in the text. It includes a free plan with Deep Research capabilities.
  • ChatGPT (OpenAI) — We tested the Pro version (GPT-4). While it provides excellent reasoning and depth, Deep Research mode is only available for paid users.
  • Mistral — An open-source tool that’s becoming popular for free, particularly in technical fields.
  • Perplexity.ai — Known for speed and clarity, offering Deep Research even on the free plan, with structured answers and transparent sourcing.
  • Jina AI Search — A free, open-source search engine tailored for deep, customizable research. It provides reference-heavy outputs but can be more technical.
  • Phind.com — Specializes in tech topics, offering interactive graphics and insights into the research process.

All these Deep Research platforms promise deep, structured insights, but their performance varied across tasks.

Test Setup

To evaluate the AI tools for search accurately, we tested each across three diverse research tasks:

  1. Emerging business models in consulting using AI agents
  2. Current trends in sustainable packaging in Europe
  3. Latest developments in quantum computing as of 2025

Each task simulated a real-world need for fast, structured insights in areas like strategy, market analysis, or technical research.

All platforms clearly cite their sources, often directly within the text. Phind and Jina AI go further by offering dedicated “References” tabs.

Number of Sources Retrieved

  • Perplexity and Jina AI retrieved the most sources (59–96 and 100+ per task, respectively).
  • Google Gemini returned high source counts (18–28 per task).
  • ChatGPT (Pro) was more selective, typically retrieving 7–27 high-quality sources.
  • Phind and Mistral offered a more focused selection (4–10 sources).

Export Options

  • Phind offers interactive graphics and easy sharing.
  • Jina AI and Perplexity offer exports in PDF, Markdown, and DOCX formats.
  • ChatGPT and Gemini provide basic copy or conversation sharing, but citation preservation isn’t always guaranteed.

Speed and Inference Time

  • Google Gemini is the fastest, with near-instant results.
  • ChatGPT, Phind, and Mistral delivered responses in seconds.
  • Perplexity and Jina AI took around 30 seconds to process full outputs.

Reliability

  • Phind had occasional errors, requiring restarts.
  • Other tools remained stable during tests.

Text Quality and Style

The quality of output text varied depending on each tool’s focus:

  • Jina AI provided the densest information, with clear arguments and rich examples. It’s best for experts needing detailed insights.
  • Google Gemini delivered clear, well-structured content, ideal for a broad audience.
  • Perplexity offered solid, balanced content, especially for strategic or market-facing tasks.
  • ChatGPT (Pro) was concise and fact-based but generally less detailed than others.
  • Phind had informative content but an inconsistent writing style.
  • Mistral provided shallow answers, best for quick summaries.
